The dissertation must consist of between 10,000 and 12,000 words of English prose on a topic agreed between the student and an appropriate member of staff (who acts as supervisor). The topic does not have to relate to work covered in previous Honours modules, though it may be helpful to the candidate if it builds on previous work.
The focus of the Ph.D. programme is the completion of a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of one or two members of staff, usually in the course of three years of full-time work.
